Lukas Bast

Lukas Bast has been a project assistant (Prae-Doc) on the INFRA-CARE research project at the Research Unit of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning, Institute of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, TU Wien, since September 2026. He completed his diploma in spatial planning at TU Wien, with a thesis, "The City as Contested Space of Meaning: The Case of the Vienna Westbahnareal under Divergent Regimes of Translation," examining how two diverging networks compete for procedural power and attentional power within an ongoing planning process.

His research asks under what conditions civic practices of care and maintenance become institutionally legible, and under what conditions they remain civic, precarious, or invisible. His interests include Actor-Network Theory, assemblage theory, and ethnographically oriented case study work.

Before joining TU Wien, he spent three years as a science coordinator at future.lab, where he conceived and hosted the podcast Zukunft Stadt and co-coordinated the faculty-wide focus programme Transformation des Bestands. Prior to that, he worked at Pocket House GmbH on neighbourhood development and ESG consulting for property developers.

Drawing on his background in graphic design and the layout of scientific publications, he is also interested in the design-led mediation between research, administration and the public.
