Wiener DurchLÄSSIGkeit
Focus SoSe25: The permeability of Vienna's urban fabric
The permeability or porosity of Vienna's urban fabric and the relevant types of open spaces and buildings (e.g. through-houses and passages, allotment gardens, parks within blocks of houses, etc.) have hardly been comprehensively recorded and researched to date. There are only a few, rather selective studies on the subject; an urban structural and explicitly spatial analysis has been lacking to date. Building on the results of past courses on the topic of ‘City Passages’ (2021 and 2023) and on existing foundations (e.g. footpath map of the Mobility Agency, Masterplan Walking, land use plans, etc.) - we will take a close look at different districts of Vienna. Whether the dense grid districts of the Gründerzeit, the more or less unplanned allotment gardens of the semi-periphery or the automobile city of the 1950s to 1990s: it is essential to sharpen our perception on site and to recognise and analyse urban spatial contexts. In addition, the exchange with actors at city and district level on legal issues and planning strategies will accompany us throughout the semester. On some dates, specific actors will be invited for discussion or as guest critics.
