TikTak Galilei
Tactical Urbanism and Placemaking for Sustainable Climate Change Adaptation in Alsergrund
"TikTak Galilei" took place as part of Elective Module 3 - City and Landscape.
The module focuses on development trends in urban and landscape environments. Combining theory-driven and practice-oriented design projects, excursions, lecture exercises, and seminars, the central focus is on integrated urban and open space planning. It lies at the intersection between spatial planning and architecture, working interdisciplinarily with master's students from both fields of study.
The main focus in 2024 was once again on Tactical Urbanism and Climate Change Adaptation.
In times of climate change and health crises, short-term, temporary transformations of public spaces are becoming increasingly important. Against this backdrop, 23 master's students of architecture and spatial planning revitalized Galileigasse in the 9th district of Vienna. The focus was on reinterpreting the Viennese residential street, which is reflected in the name of the project: "TikTak Galilei - Next Level Residential Street."
After an in-depth examination of the location and involving local stakeholders, concepts and ideas for transforming the residential street were developed and worked into a joint impulse design. As part of a construction workshop from June 5th to 16th, the students built seating furniture and planting beds, complementing them with ground paintings to create a versatile overall concept. This temporary design (planned for 3 years) is intended to serve as an impulse for future transformations. During the process, the former residential street in the area of the elementary school and VHS (Adult Education Center) was re-designated as a pedestrian zone, providing a living, playing, and recreational space for students and residents. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Alsergrund district and the Local Agenda 21.
