Landscape macht Schule
@BernoulliGymnasium
The didactic project 'Landscape macht Schule,' implemented in the form of a small design studio, dealt with the development of the potentials of outdoor spaces at educational institutions. Equal emphasis was placed on the planning process as well as the implementation of the planning. School buildings were extensively addressed in building typology, while the topic of landscape planning was explored to a lesser extent, both in theory and practice, with equal significance. A qualitative schoolyard serves as a place for relaxation, communication, and learning and can act as an identity-establishing feature. Aspects such as participation, climate sensitivity, adaptability, and gender mainstreaming play a decisive role in the planning process. Particularly in times of the COVID-19 pandemic and the call to move more activities outdoors, addressing climatological challenges, especially in older educational institutions, inevitably leads to a significant enhancement of the usable open space around schools. Although not yet included in the school authorities' and builders' space books, it is evident in the concepts and plans of school principals and teachers. The didactic goal of the design was to acquire skills for developing site-specific, functional solutions, ranging from the overall usage concept to the detailing of two small courtyards.
