Hard am Limit
Short time action for long time change
"Hard at the Limit – Short Time Action for Long Time Change" took place as part of the elective module 3 - Urban and Landscape. The module focuses on development trends in urban and landscape contexts. Combining theory-driven and practice-oriented design projects, excursions, lectures, exercises, and seminars, it centers around integrated urban and open space planning. Operating at the intersection of spatial planning and architecture, it involves interdisciplinary collaboration with master's students from both disciplines.
The thematic focus in 2023 was on Tactical Urbanism and Climate Change Adaptation.
Within the module, students were tasked with contributing to a collaborative design process to transform a largely sealed former schoolyard in Hard into a climate-friendly open space. The goal was to develop an integrated design proposal considering short, medium, and long-term horizons during the semester and to implement initial interventions on-site during a ten-day workshop. This required in-depth engagement with the location, involvement of the local community, and close coordination with the market town and the local planner. Through the co-creative process, the students developed the design concept "Hard Verbunden" (Connected Hard). Core elements of the design included space-dividing and multifunctional furniture for all age groups, partial de-sealing and greening, an urban wayfinding system, and a functional as well as aesthetic enhancement of the square area.
