Opening of the renovation in Galileigasse
Opening ceremony
In times of climate change and health crises, short-term, temporary transformations of public spaces are becoming increasingly important. Against this background, 23 students brought Galileigasse in the 9th district of Vienna to life. The transformation took place as part of the master's elective module "City and Landscape," which is jointly offered by the research areas of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning (Landscape) and Local Spatial Planning (ifoer) at TU Wien. This module, once again in cooperation with the Space Pioneers, focused on the theme of Tactical Urbanism and Climate Change Adaptation.
The project sets a new standard for quality of life in public spaces: During a construction workshop from June 5 to 16, the students built seating furniture and planting beds in the Garage Grande and on-site, complemented by ground paintings to create a versatile overall concept. This temporary (planned for three years) design aims to serve as an impulse for future transformation. The former residential street in the area of the elementary school and adult education center was redesignated as a pedestrian zone, providing living, playing, and recreation space for students and residents. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Alsergrund district and the Local Agenda 21.
On June 16, 2024, the Galileigasse was officially reopened.
