Kickstart Lienz Süd - Open Space in Transition
The interdisciplinary didactic project "Kickstart Lienz Süd" carried out in the form of a design studio focuses on exploring the potential of outdoor spaces in the predominantly single-family house neighborhood of Lienz South. The emphasis is placed on both the planning process and the planning and functional aspects.
Lienz South has significantly improved its connection to the city center with the opening of the underpass at the train station in 2021. The nearby railway line of the Pustertal/Drautal Railway, the regional bike path, and the location directly on the Drau River are additional qualities of the area.
The Inner City Development Concept (ISEK4) has considered a new train station. The Lienz South stop enhances the use of public transportation and promotes regional connectivity, effectively creating a light rail system. Within the framework of high-quality densification, mixed-use is planned to increase service availability in the area and create employment opportunities. The city of Lienz is currently discussing the renewal and design of the southern settlement area.
The project/design aims to develop a functional concept for the Lienz South neighborhood, particularly for the South Tyrol and Friedensiedlung areas, based on existing analyses and the Inner City Development Concept.
The fundamental considerations will be further extended to the neighborhood and down to the settlement areas, involving the local population.
The didactic goal of this design project is to acquire skills for discussing the need for open spaces and creating functional solutions for the future shared open space in the Lienz South neighborhood.
The planning teams are interdisciplinary, so the course is offered as a focus course (PR) or Small Design within the master's program in spatial planning and architecture. The teams have different focal points, which will be discussed and developed in collaboration with instructors and experts along various themes.
A dense and compact winter semester awaits us, with a regular meeting of the course on Wednesday afternoons. The intensive workshop in Lienz is scheduled for the first half of November. The final presentation is expected to take place in January 2024, either online or in Vienna.
