GreenUP - CoolDOWN
The increasing urban density and the impacts of climate change, especially on dense urban areas, pose significant challenges for future sustainable urban development. Green infrastructure, i.e., the greening of urban spaces, plays a crucial role. Within the course 'Green up – cool down,' innovative green design ideas were developed, and a selected project was implemented collaboratively in a 1:1 scale in the street space. The study area was the densely built Gründerzeit-era block perimeter of 'Kreta' in Inner Favoriten. Work was conducted in the urban space on-site, with interfaces to the local population and initiatives such as Materialnomaden, the carpentry workshop, and Caritas.
The course was directly integrated into the Smart Cities Demo research project LiLa4Green. Research partners PLanSinn, Grünstattgrau, and GrexIT accompanied the semester with expert input presentations and feedback in planned workshops. 'Green up – cool down' was awarded the Smart Cities Award 'Cooling the City' and presented at the ECLAS Conference 2019 as part of a poster.
