Town Hall Quarter 2040
Smart and Green: Pilot Concept for the Schwechat Town Hall Quarter 2040
On 22 April, the kick-off meeting for the Town Hall Quarter 2040 exploratory project took place at Schwechat Town Hall.
The challenges posed by climate change require a profound transformation of urban spaces. As a pioneering climate-neutral town, the municipality of Schwechat has already implemented numerous measures in the areas of mobility, energy efficiency and urban planning. As previous approaches have often been sectoral and isolated, the exploratory project “Town Hall Quarter 2040” pursues an integrated, holistic approach. The project serves to prepare a demonstration project and aims to develop an integrated planning framework for a networked system comprising energy, buildings, open spaces and social structures, with a view to creating a climate-resilient, multifunctional neighbourhood. The exploratory study deliberately focuses on municipally-owned buildings and their synergies with the surrounding area, as the immediate authority to act ensures the rapid preparation of a demonstration project.
Landscape’s focus within the project process lies on potential analyses of open space and tactical urbanism, including the identification of potential focal points within the project area.
