Future Conference: Lake Access
Conference
In some state constitutions, the protection of public access to lakes has already been more firmly established. But what does the right to nature mean in practice? Especially where real estate prices are reaching record highs, lakeside properties in public ownership are still being sold despite local protests, and the shores are hidden behind hedges and walls. What legal and design options are available to improve accessibility—from lakeside paths to mobility concepts to opening up shore areas even outside the bathing season? How can the nature-oriented design of shore zones succeed? And what overarching socially and ecologically sustainable guidelines are needed? In 2018, the Carinthian Department of Spatial Planning initiated a process where experts and citizens openly discussed the future of Carinthian lakes.
As part of a two-day conference, we aim to continue the discussion on a national level: The program includes lectures and discussions with experts from water management, architecture, landscape planning, politics and administration, as well as representatives of initiatives from various lake regions in Austria and Switzerland. During a walk through the "Experiment Field Sekirn" and an excursion with visits to selected shore areas, buildings, and projects, potentials will be discussed on-site. The conference is being held in cooperation with the course "Lake Access" from the landscape research field of TU Wien, whose concepts will also be presented and discussed.
Speakers include:
Barbara Kogelnig (Water Management, State of Carinthia), Julia Gerber Rüegg & Willy Rüegg (Lakeshore Initiative Zurichsee), Wolfgang Grillitsch and Elke Knöß-Grillitsch (Peanutz Architects), Judith Eiblmayr (Architect and Architecture Mediator), Nikolaus Gartner (Architecture Raumburgenland), Susanne Glatz-Jorde (Landscape Planner, e.c.o. – Institute for Ecology)
Curators:
Raffaela Lackner and Judith Leitner
