EDUSCAPE: Learning Through, In, and With Landscapes
Conference & Project Presentation
"Landscape is not limited to idyllic views that we know from books or vacation advertisements. Landscape surrounds us always and everywhere—even in the city. EduScape is about learning 'landscape literacy'—being able to read and understand landscapes in order to grasp everything else through this understanding!"
Richard Stiles, TU Wien
In the European research project EduScape, knowledge about current societal, ecological, and cultural challenges driven by climate change is conveyed. The fundamental idea is to use the landscapes around schools as a starting point for inquiry-based learning processes.
The results of the international research project will be presented on September 12, 2024, during a seminar for educators at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien).
EduScape offers teaching materials, methods, and tools related to current societal challenges such as biodiversity, climate change, social inclusion, and cultural heritage in 15 thematic areas. All materials can be used in regular classroom teaching, have direct links to the curriculum, and are project-oriented, interdisciplinary, and applicable across subjects.
The target group is primary school students (ages 6-10) and lower secondary school students (ages 11-15).
Each thematic area can be implemented in a total of five teaching units. The engagement with each topic can be more intensive or less demanding, depending on interest and the time available. Each unit includes an introduction for educators with the most important information.
